New 10mm Wood Elves for Warmaster

New 10mm Wood Elves

This is a newly modeled army that can be 3D printed for use in 10mm Warmaster (or any other gaming system that allows fantasy army at this scale). Seeing this collection brings back bitter memories when I used to play Warhammer 6th edition.

Our resident Wood Elf player was probably one of our best players in the group. He was memorizing all the units of all armies, with their stats and uses, reading forums and actively trying to engineer his army so that he could counter most threats from all comers in tournaments. I usually confronted him with my Orc Infantry horde and while my blocks were being whittled down and sometimes broke from multiple charges of his wardancers and driads, I could usually hold my own because I would nuke him out of orbit with my Great Shaman’s Warpath. Fun was had, and I dare say I never had an easy game against him.

So I’m excited to see these models for an army that was hard hitting yet very unforgiving if you’re not maneuvering them correctly.

Wood Elf Spearmen

One of the core troop choices for the Wood Elves, these spearmen were pretty bad because they only did one thing and that was “be a non-skirmishing block of infantry that the enemy can engage at will”. Sure, they sound great and you can support them with a character but in an army that’s all about charging with fast moving troops these guys were too slow and too weak to pack a punch.

Wood Elf Archers

One of the other core troop choices, now we’re getting into the meat of things. They’re archers and they are lightly armored, but they hit well and a few units of these can literally sweep the field of lightly armored units. What they actually do well and it’s not written anywhere is that they tend to help the enemy funnel towards them, as they are seen as a threat that can be engaged as they sit there pumping arrows. Once the enemy approaches them you can literally pick your charges with the hard hitting mobile units.

Wood Elf Light Cavalry

Another weird choice here, the light cavalry is a bit weak for the regular wood elf list that you would get. If you want more bow shots, you should get archers. If you want fast moving hard hitting troops, you’d better get dryads or war dancers. They are a bit expensive without any definite role, but they worked well with a character in them as a fast hitting force.

Wood Elf Light Cavalry

Wood Elf Dryads

Back in my day, Dryads were the very essence of broken Wood Elf power. Skirmishing T4 models that hit hard and were usually engaging you from the flank. Plop 2 units of these into an enemy infantry block and watch it crumble. Very nice models and an absolute beast of a unit on the battlefield. I really like the nature vibe all the tree variants give out.

Wood Elf Dryads

Wood Elf Treekin

Ogre based tree folk, some sort of big brother for the Dryads. Another hard hitting unit that instead had to move as a normal infantry block, which made them kind of like the Trolls/Ogres/Kroxigor/Ushabti variants of monster units. What these guys were having was T5 and lots of wounds, which could sometimes form the basis of a “tree folk” army as you could build your support units around these guys.

Wood Elf Treekin

Wood Elf Dancers

My favorite melee unit in the Wood Elf army. These guys are essentially forest activists with a high movement and lots of attacks. A small ward save on top made them a fierce unit to receive a charge from, but very squishy if you could hit them first or manage to retaliate. Absolutely amazing models, to be honest!

Wood Elf Dancers

Wood Elf Rangers

My favorite all around Wood Elf unit, the Waywatchers! These guys are the epitome of Wood Elfiness! Cloaked figures with amazing ballistic skill that can scout and really work the “forward operating bad asses” that we all wanted after we watched Lord of the Rings and Aragorn. The whole look breathes forest assassins’, and even though they were usually expensive, they were a nuisance to engage and to get rid off.

Wood Elf Rangers

Wood Elf Wild Riders

One of the more interesting additions to the Wood Elf roster, namely their Heavy Cavalry. My friend did not use them (I think) because they wouldn’t fit his style, but these guys need to be far away from enemy ranged weapons to actually make their points back. I could see them be used in a very fast moving force with a Dragon, Light Cavalry and Hawk Riders though, and that would be a nice thematic approach to a thundering Wild Hunt!

Wood Elf Wild Riders

Wood Elf Treeman

The Wood Elf Giant! This guy was extremely tough with a lot of wounds and hard hitting attacks. His only weakness is the flammable rule (that he usually has in all fantasy systems) but being a forest walker means you can usually hide pretty well and surprise ambush anyone who dares pass by his patch of trees. I love the menacing look of this model and I believe you could take 2 of these bad boys in an old Wood Elf list.

Wood Elf Treeman

Wood Elf Hawk Riders

Ye olde Warhawk Riders! Flying move (so a very long charge) and they can also shoot and use their spears on the charge. They are probably one of the best hard hitting flying units in the game, which further reinforces the Wood Elf Archetype that they shoot, shoot and shoot you, and then they get some combined charges to shatter whatever is left. They were pretty expensive and a rare choice, but I always saw these guy on the battlefield.

Wood Elf Hawk Riders

Wood Elf Forest Dragon

Another staple of the kind of army that I was facing, the Forest Dragon is pretty much a big mean dragon that can literally ruin the day of a whole army with some proper charges. High number of attacks, high number of wounds and big armor saves makes Dragons literally “the threat” on the battlefield. I really like the model here, as you can see the wings are sculpted to resemble a tree leaf, while the whole pose inspires power.

Wood Elf Characters

Finally, the character choices! A very good selection, with a wild rider commander, a normal elf mounted commander and a mounted sorceress. On the infantry side, we have ranger, dryad, sorceress and commander choices. What I see missing here is a BSB choice, but I guess you can either convert one or simply refrain from using such an option in the army.

And here they are arrayed together! Good sculpts and the choices cover pretty much all the staple Wood Elf army choices! You can easily create either a mounted army variant, a treekin force or a basic infantry/skirmishing force, so the level of customizability if you get 2-3 regiments of each choice is amazing! It’s also an easy army to paint (even if you would not think so) because most of the models will be camouflaged in forest colors, so the level of detail needed is not excessive.
