Get cheap German Late War Infantry

Let’s see how we can start building a Cheap German Infantry force with the minimum of expense and hustle!

First of all we start with the Plastic Soldier Company Late War German Infantry box.

Flames of War

The contents of the box are the following:

50 Infantry with Rifles
10 Light Machine Gun teams moving: 1 gunner carrying the LMG and 1 loader carrying the ammo
5 Light Machine Gun teams firing: 1 gunner firing the LMG and 1 loader supplying the ammo
25 Infantry with MP-40 (10 are throwing grenades)
5 Radio Guys
5 Medics
5 Infantry with MP-40 standing and signalling (potential NCO’s)
10 Infantry with MP-40 kneeling and signalling (potential NCO’s)

A grand total of 130 figurines. Let’s see how this can be best organized for a Late War Grenadierkompanie (Heer) for Flames of War.

A Rifle/MG team is best represented by 2 Riflemen and 1 LMG team on a medium base. No point in having bases with 5 soldiers and 4 soldiers on them, as Battlefront recommends. It’s also more symmetrical and looks cleaner to have the same number of soldiers all around. There are some that might disagree with me and who like the diversity however keep in mind lesser soldiers used on each base means less expense on our budget.

That means from the start we can write off all 15 LMG teams and 30 Infantry with Rifles. These will form 15 Rifle/MG teams. Base them on medium bases.

5 of the kneeling MP-40 guys go very well together with the 5 Radio guys. These will form 5 Command Rifle/MG teams. Base 2 figures (1 MP-40 + 1 Radio) on a small base for each team.

The last 5 kneeling guys can be coupled with the 5 Medics and the 5 standing MP-40 signalling guys to form 5 Company command teams. You will only need 2 in your Grenadierkompanie but it doesn’t hurt to have some extra. Base them on small bases.

Now we are left with 20 Riflemen and 25 SMG guys. These mean 5 Rifle squads and 6 SMG squads with 1 MP-40 figure left over. My suggestion is to go ahead and stick that on one of the Company Command bases to signify the difference between the Company Command team and the 2nd In Command team.

And we are done! Let’s see what we got out of our PSC box:

15 Rifle/MG teams on medium bases: Each has 2 Rifle Infantry and 1 LMG team (either moving or firing)
5 Rifle teams on medium bases: Each has 4 Rifle Infantry
6 SMG teams on medium bases: Each has 4 SMG Infantry
5 Command Rifle/MG teams on small bases: Each has 1 SMG Infantry and 1 Radio guy
1 Company command team on small base: 3 SMG Infantry and 1 Medic
4 2nd IC teams on small bases: Each has 2 SMG Infantry and 1 Medic

Keep in mind Battlefront recommends you simulate a Rifle/MG platoon by using half Rifle and half Rifle/LMG teams. We only have 5 Rifle teams but you can throw them in the mix together with 13 Rifle/LMG teams (or 4 Rifle and 14 Rifle/LMG or 3 Rifle and 15 Rifle/LMG teams) and easily field the following:

Grenadierkompanie (Heer) HQ: 45 points
1 x Company Command SMG team
1 x 2iC Command SMG team
Grenadier Platoon (Heer): 155 points
1 x Command Rifle/MG team
6 x Rifle/MG team
Grenadier Platoon (Heer): 155 points
1 x Command Rifle/MG team
6 x Rifle/MG team
Grenadier Platoon (Heer): 155 points
1 x Command Rifle/MG team
6 x Rifle/MG team

A total of 510 points with spares left. Building a FOW force has never been more simple and more on the budget with this simple Cheap German Infantry article!
