The Soviet Tank Company is just that: a mass of tanks rushing the enemy and overwhelming him before he can react.
The Soviets are certainly the underdogs of Flames of War, mainly because their quantity can be funneled through terrain and forced in choke points where the quality of the troops matters more. Nevertheless it is quite historical and awesome to field a Soviet Tank company which will usually outnumber its enemies by at least 2 to 1. This force is Confident Trained. It can be found in the Flames of War V3 rulebook and is available for free on www.EasyArmy.com.
The HQ choice can be either a T34 obr 1942 or a T34/85 obr 1943. This choice is actually representative for the whole company. The 1942 is cheaper and is a Fast Tank and has Wide tracks (so movement is better) however the 1943 gains 1 Frontal Armor and 3 AT rating on its gun (the upgraded 85mm vs the old 76mm). If you know you’re going against a tank force you’d better get the 1943. If you want to have your force stronger against anything else you should go with the 1942 (it is cheaper so you get more bodies). I chose to go versatility so we get a T-34 obr 1942.
Next come the core companies and the choice is easy. Load up on T34 obr 1942. Since they will be your main hitters you want to give all of them Cupolas for 10 points per company (Cupola eliminates Limited Vision from your tanks which in turn makes you more effective while shooting since Limited Vision means you add +1 to your score to hit – surely a bad thing which we want to avoid). Maximum size of 10 tanks is what we need.
And we are actually done! Now deploy your horde and watch your opponent’s face as he sees 21 tanks facing him.
