Battlefleet Gothic, a game that is widely regarded by most as truly the best gaming system that Games Workshop has published. Even Warhammer 40k fans admit it’s simplicity and appeal and the fanbase, while small, is extremely dedicated and passionate about it. A Revised version is even in the works for several years, as Games Workshop has sadly abandoned this Specialist Game. But we are not here to talk about the game (as much as I’d like to). What i want to talk about (and actually write a guide about to help fellow gamers) is how to customize your Chaos Cruisers to indicate the different types that are available.
If you ever opened up a brand new box of BFG Chaos Cruisers you will see allot of parts and you’d be clueless on how to use them or what each represents. I know i was. Add to this the fact that apparently there are around 7-8 Chaos Cruiser designs (all based on the bits in the box) and the situation becomes quite complex. I am going to show you the contents of the Chaos Cruiser box and then, based on the BFG Rulebook drawings, we will assign the bits to each Cruiser design.
As you can see the top side has a Bridge area (to the rear) and 2 holes for customizing it (in the middle, i am going to name them Front and Rear Slot). Also, to the middle right and left is where the main weapon options go (also differentiated as Front Slot and Rear Slot). 2 types of bridges are available. We’re just going to name them Bridge A and Bridge B. The sprue with the weapon options: Weapons Battery, Lance slots and Launch Bays. Also included are 2 types of Antenna, named for convenience A and B. Finally, 3 types of Lance Turrets: A, B and C. It doesn’t matter how you use them but personally i prefer to use Type B when available. It just looks more ship like (think real WW2 Battleships)Chaos Cruiser Types
1: Bridge Type A.
2: Single Lance Turret in Top side Front Slot.
3: Antenna B on both sides of the hull.
4: Both Weapon Options are Launch Bays (you need 4 Launch Bays).
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Double Lance Turrets in both Top side slots.
3: 2 x Antenna B on both sides of the hull (you need 4 Antenna).
4: Both Weapon Options are Weapons Battery (you need 4 Weapons Battery).
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Double Lance Turrets in both Top side slots.
3. Both Weapon Options are Lance Battery (you need 8 Lance Turrets). These turrets are mounted directly onto the hull mounts.
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Single Antenna A in Top side Front Slot.
3: Front Weapon Slot is Launch Bays and Rear Weapon Slot is Lance bay with a Lance Turret.
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Single Antenna A in Top side Front Slot.
3: Both Weapon Options are Weapons Battery (you need 4 Weapons Battery).
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Both Weapon Options are Weapons Battery (you need 4 Weapons Battery).
1: Bridge Type A.
2: Single Antenna A in Top side Front Slot.
3: Both Weapon Options are Lance bays with Lance Turrets. This is quite strange as one of the options should be Weapons Battery.
1: Bridge Type B.
2: Double Lance Turrets in both Top side slots.
3: Front Weapon Slot is Launch Bays and Rear Weapon Slot is occupied by double Lance turrets mounted directly on the hull.
1: Bridge Type B.
2. Front Weapon Slot is Lance bays with a Lance Turret and Rear Weapon Slot is Weapons Battery.
These are all Chaos Cruiser designs that can be built on the Chaos Cruiser sprue. The last 2 are from the Additional Ships Compendium while the rest are from the classic BFG Rulebook.
Now, there is nothing stopping you from further customizing the ships and adding bits as you would please. This is true especially for the ships that do not have Dorsal Turrets, where you can simply add Antennas to spice up the detail.
Hope this helps!
