A very fast Flames of War game teaches us a few essentials. German Panzers (George) versus American Tank Company (Eugen).
With a bit of free time and enough american tanks painted we decided to have a 1000 points Flames of War match. My force was:
American Tank Company
HQ: 2 x M4A1
1st Platoon: 4 x M4A1
2nd Platoon: 4 x M4A1
3rd Platoon: Parachute Rifle Platoon cu 3 Squads
George used a variation of Panzerkompanie:
German Panzerkompanie
HQ: 2 x Panzer IV
1st Platoon: 3 x Panzer IV
2nd Platoon: 3 x StuG III
3rd Platoon: 3 x Sd.kfz. 222
4th Platoon: Grenadier Platoon cu 2 Squads
We rapidly arranged some terrain and here is the deployment:
The paratroopers are hidden in the forest protecting the American objective and the grenadiers are in the opposite buildings, doing the same thing. I decided to focus my Sherman’s on a single side with a bit of cover from the wall in front of them.
First round of German shooting sees 3 Sherman’s downed.
On my turn i advance and pour a bucket load of shots into the Panzer IV’s but i get only a bailed out results (which promptly remounted). I wait for next turn being sure that the German firepower will cause allot of damage.
And indeed 5 more Shermans are knocked out. In that moment it was clear that i could not win the match so i decided to move out and assault the recon platoon with my paratroopers just to go through an assault (we’re trying to learn the rules as much as we can).
Altough the distance was good the defensive fire yields 5 hits so i automatically have to withdraw. That was when we stopped the game and started commenting our game:
– Terrain should be a bit more dense to prevent long range fire exchange. Due to the firepower (higher AT rating) of the German tanks and the Trained status of the American tanks that made the exchange be very fast (in favor of the Germans).
– Americans are indeed good to fire and maneuver due to their tank special rule (they can fire full ROF with a penalty even when they move).
– The American paratroopers would have probably lasted allot in that forest due to being Veterans but we preferred to see how an assault would go.
– The German grenadiers probably didn’t even knew they were attacked.
– Cover does matter in case there was any doubt.
