In this episode Eugen “Baycee” Baicea gets done the basis for an American Tank Company force for Flames of War.
When i did my first steps in Flames of War i begun (as almost all passionate gamers) with Germans. After noticing that they are indeed a popular choice, to break the rule a bit, i decided to change towards Russians or Americans. Because i had available a few Sherman’s the choice was clear: an American Tank Company.
This month i begun with the 2 core platoons. It’s obvious that i need them at full strength so that meant 10 tanks.
The Sherman’s are extremely easy to assemble, as you can see here: Sherman.
As soon as i finished assembly i begun painting. Next is my personal guide for painting American tanks, with good results from my point of view. They will not win prizes but will be good for wargaming. All colors are Vallejo.
Basecoat with Brown Violet 887, followed by a wash with Black Shade 201. This step is pretty important, adding depth to the model.
Then we drybrush with Camouflage Olive Green 894 but just on the exposed straight areas (not on the corners or details). Then we detail the luggage on the tank with Khaki Grey 880 and we use Black for tracks and the turret machine-gun.
As a last step we do another Khaki Grey 880 drybrush over all the tank elevated surfaces. The combination of Green with Khaki Grey will make the tank appear used and dirty (at least on this scale).
And here are the results:
And all 10:
Indeed they are not yet completelly finished. The luggage straps need to be painted red or brown. Another small Brown drybrush has to be applied to the tracks to simulate mud and they need decals.
Final result:
Tanc Platoon: 345 points
5 x Sherman M4A1
Tanc Platoon: 345 points
5 x Sherman M4A1
Total: 690 points
My next objective is to finish up details and paint the tanks for the HQ platoon and maybe some infantry.
